Updated Housing Element for Public Review

Lafayette submitted its City-Council-adopted 6th Cycle Housing Element to the State of California’s Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) on January 31, 2023.  On March 29, the City received HCD’s review letter finding that “the adopted element addresses many statutory requirements; however, revisions will be necessary to comply with State Housing Element Law.”

Over the past six months, the Council has held six public hearings to review and discuss proposed revisions to the document to satisfy the State’s comments. Thank you to all the members of the public who have participated and provided feedback throughout the process!

On Monday, October 23rd, the City Council considered additional revisions to the Housing Element following direction provided to staff at the September 26th meeting. During the meeting, staff presented the anticipated project timeline for certification by the State and completing the required rezoning to implement the Housing Element by January 31, 2024. Staff also summarized other revisions made to respond to comments from the State’s review letter. Click here for the presentation slides. The Council provided feedback on further revisions and directed staff to resubmit the updated Housing Element to the State following a 7 day public review period. Once submitted, the State is required to provide comments within 60-days of receiving the updated version.
