The 2040 General Plan for Lafayette, California will be the blueprint for how and where the City will grow over the next 20 years. In 2020, the City initiated an update to the General Plan to ensure it remains responsive to the challenges of the coming years. The General Plan represents the official policy regarding the future character and quality of development to reflect these values and achieve its goals, so we want to hear from you! This website is the community’s resource for up-to-date information, including the project timeline, upcoming public participation opportunities, and much more.

Like other cities in the Bay Area and across the country, Lafayette has experienced many changes over the last 50 years. In the almost 20 years since the last General Plan was adopted in 2002, Lafayette has experienced a period of rapid growth. Lafayette will continue to change and develop into the future and the vehicle for planning for that future growth is the General Plan. The General Plan centers community priorities around conservation and development to define a desirable balance for Lafayette’s social, environmental, and economic values.

Recent Updates

General Plan Advisory Committee

The General Plan Advisory Committee, or GPAC, is a group of community members volunteering to serve the Lafayette community through the General Plan update process. The residential district, at-large, and nonprofit representatives were chosen at random through a lottery process in October 2020 to serve alongside Commission members nominated at public meetings. The GPAC Roles, Agreements and Best Practices governing the work of the committee is available for review .

Community input is at the center of the process and will inform the recommendations that the GPAC puts forward to the Planning Commission and City Council. The GPAC is seeking community input through public workshops and engagement activities to draft the next General Plan.

All GPAC meetings are open to the public and posted on the City events calendar and the “Get Involved” page of this site. Interested parties may subscribe to e-notifications for the “General Plan update” to receive updates about GPAC meetings and other events related to the General Plan.

To contact a GPAC member, please email generalplan@lovelafayette.org with your request and Planning staff will connect you to the appropriate parties.
